Kenya to produce green electricity

Written By:KNA   , Posted: Wed, Nov 25, 2009

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is set to meet consumers of 11000 mega watts by 2030 to combat the effects of drought.

Speaking during a conference on green and competitive electricity dubbed "Powering Kenya into a green energy future," KPLC managing director Joseph Njoroge said that Kenya has rich resources which would produce a lot of green electricity.

He added that the company aimed at reducing cost of generation for low capital projects, and displace thermal units to regulate hydro power reservoirs.

Njoroge said that the profit made by the company is for the producers and consumers, paid as revenue to the government.

Tariffs imposed to the consumers are based on voltage supply; Njoroge said adding that equity liability is currently at 15.9 billion.

He said that the task force that will be formed on the accelerated development of green energy will seek for formulation of structures to oversee the success of green energy production in the country.
