Corruption: KRA fights vice within itself

Caption: The statement by KRA comes in the wake of media reports linking employees of the authority in a tax evasion scam at the port of Mombasa.

Kenya Revenue Authority says none of its employees will be spared if caught engaging in tax evasion and corruption.

Commissioner General Michael Waweru says the authority is committed to the fight against corruption to ensure that they uphold the highest standards of reliability and integrity.

The statement by KRA comes in the wake of media reports linking employees of the authority in a tax evasion scam at the port of Mombasa.

The report had cited collusion between customs officials and clearing agents who undervalue imports to pay less duty.

KRA maintained that it upholds the highest standards of honesty, reliability and honor.

Waweru revealed that who revealed that more than 162 officers involved in corrupt practices have faced disciplinary action in the last 18 months.

He said KRA had developed an Integrity Action Plan undertaken jointly with Kenya Anti Corruption Commission KACC which tests the integrity of staff as they carry out their duties.

"We have instituted measures to eradicate corruption to ensure that we collect all the revenue due to the government" he added

"Besides this, all KRA departments and regions have corruption Prevention Committees and we also carry out corruption risk assessment on a regular bases"

Waweru also called on the business community to change in order to help ease cases of corruption involving tax evasion
