Minister sues newspaper for defamation

Written By:Dzuya Walter    , Posted: Mon, Nov 30, 2009

Minister for education Professor Sam Ongeri has Monday sued a local newspaper for defamation.

Ongeri argues that an article published on the 9th of November on The  Star under the byline, "KACC PROBES ONGERI OVER 261 MILLIOM SHILLINGS SCANDAL" has lowered his reputation and that he is not under any investigations by KACC.

He argues that the paper failed to authenticate the allegations contained in the said publication before making it public.

He now wants the court to order the daily newspaper to pay him general damages for libel.

Elsewhere, an Equity bank employee was at the chief magistrate's court to answer charges of stealing five million shillings.

Bernadine Kithia Munguti pleaded not guilty and was released on a cash bail of 80,000 shillings.

It is alleged that he committed the offence on the 17th of this month at Equity bank, Mama Ngina branch.
