VP calls on South-South countries to be united

Written By:VPPS    , Posted: Thu, Dec 03, 2009

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the South-South member countries to push for a common and favorable agenda during the forthcoming Copenhagen conference on climate change.

Mr. Musyoka said though South-South member states are not major contributors to climatic change phenomenon, they suffer most from its effects, hence the need for a unanimous drive to push for measures that would reverse the trend.

"South-South member states should therefore go to Copenhagen as a united and formidable force to make its voice heard on the international platform", said Mr. Musyoka, when he officially closed of a High-Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation at the UN Complex, Gigiri, Nairobi Thursday.

The three day conference also marked the 30 years since the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan in 1978.

It was also attended by the Minister for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030 Wycliffe Oparanya, United Nations Deputy Secretary General Dr. Asha Rose Migiro, UNDP Administrator Hellen Clarke, and Amb. Nassir Abdulazaiz Al- Nasser the President of High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation Conference among others.

Mr. Musyoka commended the organizers of the conference saying it had enabled the countries to enhance cooperation amongst themselves, the international community and regional organizations in addressing the recent international economic and financial crisis.

"There is no doubt that developing countries were ill-prepared to deal with the attendant challenges brought about by the international economic and financial crises", Mr. Musyoka noted.

The Vice President commended developed countries for their continuous support  to developing countries which he said had enabled them to achieve significant improvements in infrastructure development, agriculture, research, information technology, capacity building, and health  among other sectors.

He described prevalent poverty in South-South member states as a monumental challenge whose solution lies with the developing countries while collaborating with the international community.

Mr. Musyoka at the same time urged the member-states to fulfill the commitment of the DOHA Declaration on Finance for Development particularly by strengthening of the special unit for South-South cooperation as reaffirmed by the General Assembly Resolutions.

He lauded the participants for coming up with resolutions that will enhance South-South and other triangular co-operations, stimulate country-based programs and push for the implementation of various pacts in a bid to improving the status of member states.
