Pressure continues to mount on education minister Prof. Sam Ongeri and his permanent secretary prof. Karega Mutahi to step down.

Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale has added a new twist to the scandal claiming there is more to the free primary education cash scam than has been revealed.

Khalwale alleges the minister should also come out clean over another 286 million shillings meant for the purchase of school science equipments that has not been accounted for.

Meanwhile, Manyatta MP Emillio Kathuri also demanded that those behind the scandal be brought to justice.

Elsewhere, Civic leaders in from Gusii have defended education minister Sam Ongeri over the missing free primary education money saying the minister had nothing to do with the alleged fraud.

The councillors who convened a press conference in Kisii asked Kenyans to remain patient as the Kenya anti corruption commission officials unravelled the sh.100 million riddle.

KNUT secretary general Laurence Majali and Knap's Musau Ndunda have demanded that the minister resigns over the scandal at Jogoo house.

But the civic leaders warned against politicising the matter while investigations were ongoing.

Former Nyamira town council chairman Nelson Onduko observed that president Mwai Kibaki had authorised investigations into the scam and Kenyans should wait for the outcome before giving their verdict.

Councillors Monyenye Yoge, Alloys Omae,James Omariba and Kepha Mogaka flanked Onduko who reiterated that it was the education PS Karega Mutahi who should bear the brunt in the crisis.

The councillors noted that it was the PS and other chief officers who were directly responsible in the questionable transactions and might have done it behind the ministers back.

Monyenye said it was unfortunate some leaders were politicising the issue by villifying the minister calling for his resignation.

He said the Kacc investigators should be given ample time to sort out the mess and asked Kibaki to sack the PS whom he claimed was out to undermine the minister.

The civic leaders censured Majali and Ndunda for personalising it with Ongeri over their differences on teacher recruitment.
