World Indoor champs to start Friday

The IAAF World Indoor athletics championships start on Friday to Sunday in Doha Qatar where Kenya will be represented by seven athletes.

Kenya's Augustine Choge the world season leader with a time of 7 minutes 31.75 seconds and compatriot Sammy Mutahi will compete in the 3000m where Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia will be out to defend his title as Kenyan born American Bernard Lagat aims to recapture the title.

In the 3000m women's race Kenya's quest for medals will be spear headed by reigning world 5000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot  and World championships silver medalist Sylvia Kibet will face off with world record holder Meseret Defar of Ethiopia who will be chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive title in the event.

 INDOOR-STADIUM DOHA.jpgAfrica senior championships gold medalist Harun Keitany and Gideon Gathimba boasting a personal best time of 3 minutes 35.40 seconds will be out to steal the limelight from Ethiopian Deresse Mekonnen who returns to defend his 1500m title.

2006 World junior champion Irene Jelagat is Kenya's sole flag bearer in the women's race.

Defending champion Abubaker Kaki of Sudan is the man to beat in the 800m and that task fall squarely on Boaz Lalang winner of the Millrose Games in New York.

In the last edition held in Valencia Spain two years ago Kenya finished 18th with two silver medals.
