Prime Minister Raila Odinga has directed internal security minister to order the arrest of police officers involved in the brutal murder of seven people in Kawangware last Thursday.
The PM said the officers must be apprehended immediately and be arraigned in court by Monday next week adding that Kenya is not a failed state and must not resist the temptation of turning into a police state.
"The rule of Law, Constitutional rights and God given life must be respected and enjoyed by all."Raila said.
Raila further accused the police of committing massive murder under unclear circumstances and getting away with the crime.
"Many people have been killed in the name of Mungiki sect in pretext that the police are shooting in self defense, not even one has been charged," Mr. Odinga remarked.
He added that mere suspension and interdiction of the officers who were involved in the Kawangware killings was not enough noting that the officers involved must face the Law just like any other Kenyan involved in the crime would.
The Premier expressed concern that no Kenyan was safe if this brutality is allowed to continue.
"Today it is Oscar King'ara, tomorrow it will be a suspected Mungiki sect member, and the following day will be somebody else." He said.
Raila who was addressing the press conference at his Treasury Office, said the law must apply equally to all Kenyans and that the police "madness'' must stop.
"I want this to be a test case to the commitment of police reforms and the rule of law," Raila remarked.
Meanwhile the PM is set to visit Ukambani next week to inspect government development projects.
This was confirmed earlier Saturday when he met leaders from Eastern Province led by Water minister, Hon.Charity Ngilu who paid him a courtesy call at his Treasury Office.
The leaders, through their spokes person Dr. Musyoka urged the government to construct more dams in the area to take advantage of the ongoing rains and preserve water for the future.
They also expressed worries that the farmers in the area were selling their farm produce at a throw away price owing to lack of storage facilities from the National Cereals and Produce Board.
Dr. Musyoka further urged the Premier to form a Sand Levy Board to regulate the selling of sand in the area.
The Premier promised the leaders that he will look into all the raised issues and respond appropriately after consulting with the relevant government officials.
Also present were former MP George Nyenze, civic leaders, youth representatives, Religious leaders from the area among others.
