Written By:KNA    , Posted: Tue, Mar 16, 2010

The Prime Minister Raila Odinga has denied that the government intends to charge commuters crossing the Likoni channel.

This he said was as a way to rubbish off the remarks made by the former Transport Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere early this year that the government had plans to introduce a levy to ferry users.

Speaking during his one day tour at the coast province where he met the Mombasa town councilors at the town hall, Raila said that the government is committed to construct Dongo kundu by-pass next year to be a permanent solution to ease congestion at the Likoni channel.

He hinted out that the government has long plans to construct under by-pass Bridge at the channel as part of expansion program at the port of Mombasa hence making the town a tourist destination.

Raila disclosed that the government has identified Mombasa, Kisumu, and Lamu  as part of country special economy role.

On constitution, Raila wants members of parliament to withdraw hard-line positions for the sake of enacting of a new constitution.

On Matuga Raila said the party will marshal its troop to campaign for party flag bearer Hassan Mwanyoa a head of yet announced by election.

However the Mombasa mayor Ahmed Mohdhar raised an alarm that the town was running short of fire engines and asked the government to kindly intervane in the bid to ensure the town atheist gets two more engines.
