Police chief vows to end Mungiki menaceWritten By:Kemei Kimeli , Posted: Tue, Jan 14, 2003
Police Commissioner Philemon Abongo has instructed Mungiki sect leader Ndura Waruinge to surrender to the police and record a statement in connection with the threats he is alleged to have issued on Monday.
Reacting to the threats, Abongo said the police will not rest until all the sect members were brought to book.
The sect’s national co-ordinator threatened to retaliate if the police continued their crackdown on the sect’s members.
Abongo said the government is determined to eliminate the violent Mungiki sect adding that stern action will be taken against the errant sect members.
The Commissioner of Police said all police chiefs have been instructed to deal firmly with Mungiki adding that that was the resolve of the Government on the Mungiki issue.
A week ago, Mungiki people killed 23 innocents in Nakuru and two more in Murang’a. In 2001, Mungiki killed over 20 people in Nairobi’s Kariobangi area.
Mungiki people were said to have been exacting revenge in both the Nakuru and Kariobangi incidents. |
