President Mwai Kibaki has sent a message of greetings and goodwill to the entire Muslim community as they celebrate Idd-El-Fitr.

The President noted that Idd-El-Fitr is a great day in the Islamic calendar, which all other Kenyans observe as a national holiday in solidarity with their Muslim brothers and sisters.

"I wish all Muslim brethren and people of goodwill the blessings of Allah and call upon all Muslims to pray for peace and prosperity in our country. Idd Mubarak," President Kibaki said in his goodwill message.

He commended the Muslim community in the country for the invaluable role they play in inculcating moral rectitude and in championing high standards of righteousness and justice which exalt a nation.

President Kibaki also congratulated them for their dedication to fasting and prayer during the foregoing Holy month of Ramadhan.

Meanwhile, a section of Muslim faithful in Mombasa performed Idd-el- fitr prayers even as the chief Kadhi announced that the new moon has not been sighted.

The Muslims claimed the new moon has been sighted in several towns in North Eastern province.

On Monday evening chants of 'takbir' to signal the end of Ramadhan rent the air in some mosques, thereby creating confusion among Muslims in parts of the town.

However, Chief Kadhi Sheikh Hammad Kassim announced through local fm radio stations at 11.00 PM last night that the new moon had not been sighted and Muslims should ignore any attempts by some groups to mislead them into breaking their fast.

Under Kenyan law, only the chief Kadhi should announce the start and end of the fasting month of Ramadan, but a section of Muslims have over the years ignored this regulation and followed alleged sightings in Saudi Arabia or Somalia.
