Michelle Slater, the general manager of EatOut Kenya, is the best person to ask about food. It’s basically her job. Given the chance, she would have told us about all the great places to EatOut (see what I did there?) but we limited her to five.
- A beef burger paired with a bottle of Shiraz
Where: Sierra Bar and Grill
What she had to say: Sierra has opened up a swanky new grill house in Westlands. I tried one of their burgers made from 100% Black Angus beef, dry aged for 21 days and it was literally the poshest burger I’ve had! It was true to whatever flavours were in it. This goes for all the burgers, so whatever burger you picked, the flavour profiles were really beautiful. This was paired with a bottle of Shiraz from their carefully curated selection of South Africa wine. I shared the bottle with my friends, of course. (Laughs)
2. Chorizo braised in red wine cazuela with grilled salmon, black bean salsa and spiced fish ceviche
Where: Tapas Ceviche Bar (Westgate)
What she had to say: During restaurant week, with over 100 restaurants participating you get to sample a lot of things, but the one place I love is Tapas Ceviche Bar at Westgate. I love the food and vibe. The best thing about Tapas is you get to eat a lot of different things at one go. Its small portions of everything.
3. Spiced Yellowfin tuna with wasabi croquettes, kaiso seaweed and pawpaw salad and lime and wasabi sorbet
What she had to say: I last went to Talisman on a lazy Sunday and I think Talisman is one of those places that have a combination of excellent setting and beautiful, well-thought out food. The dish itself was great.
4. Swahili Wings
Where: At the Singleton Bits and Barrels Festival
What she had to say: We did an event recently, called “The Singleton Bites and Barrels Festival”. We partnered with Singleton and there were all sorts of whisky infused food. I tried several dishes from the event which were amazing. Then there were the Swahili Wings by Chef Hector from Picazzo Restaurant. His wings were amazing and they were served in this coconut sauce so that definitely would be on my top 5.
5. Mango Maasai with spicy fries and a cold beer
Where: Mama Rocks
All I can say is that this dish never disappoints!
