Ujah eyes Paris boost to European hopes

Ujah aims to gain edge on Dasaolu in Paris

British sprinter Chijindu Ujah will hope a fast time at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Saturday will boost his hopes of selection for next month’s European Championships in Zurich.

Ujah is battling for Britain’s third 100m spot with James Dasaolu.

Dasaolu ran 10.03 seconds in Lausanne on Thursday but a comparable time by Ujah will cause a selection dilemma.

Ujah clocked 9.96 last month, while Dasaolu ran 9.91 last year, making him the second fastest Briton of all time.

Dwain Chambers and former world junior champion Harry Aikines-Aryeetey guaranteed their places in Zurich by finishing first and second at last month’s British trials.

Ujah, 20, struggled with cramp in Birmingham and finished third in 10.18, while Dasaolu, 26, has yet to race outdoors this season after straining a hamstring in February.

Neither Ujah or Dasaolu were selected by England for the Commonwealth Games as they did not meet the qualifying standard during the prescribed time-frame.

Dasaolu is due to run in the British Grand Prix in Glasgow on 11 July, three days before the selectors announce their squad for Zurich.

Jamaica’s Asafa Powell has withdrawn from the 100m because of a hamstring injury. Powell was set to compete for the first time since he failed a doping test in June 2013.

Ujah, who is making his Diamond League debut, will be up against home favourite Christophe Lemaitre and Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson, the second quickest man this year with a time of 9.82.

British 400m hurdles champion Niall Flannery  also makes his Diamond League debut in Paris and will face this season’s world number one Javier Culson and Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton.

Britain’s Shara Proctor, the defending overall Diamond League long jump champion, faces this year’s world number one Tianna Bartoletta of the United States, while Tiffany Porter takes on Australia’s Olympic champion Sally Pearson in the 100m hurdles.

British steeplechase champion Eilish McColgan is also in action and will be up against world champion Milcah Chemo s of Kenya.
