WFP orders disposal of 5000 bags of maize

The World Food Program has ordered the immediate disposal of 5000 bags of maize purchased by the Samburu County Government terming it unfit for human consumption.

Samburu County Governor Moses Lenolkulal says the consignment was purchased from the National Cereal Produce Board, Maralal branch and was to be distributed to the drought-affected areas in the county.

The latest development coming as the bane of drought continue to take its toll in arid and semi arid regions even as the government maintains that it has put in place contingency measures to mitigate its effects.

Despite Wajir county administration having put in place mitigation mechanisms, the county has been overstretched due to two failed rain seasons.

Just this week, Agriculture Cabinet secretary Felix Koskei signed a project expected to set in motion the progress of the one-million-acre Galana-Kulalu Irrigation Scheme.

Kenya Red Cross Society says that 2.1 million people in various counties face starvation unless intervention measures are put in place to distribute relief food.
