1 cow initiative launched in Kakamega

By Jeremy Ogolla

The County Government of Kakamega has launched a one cow initiative that will see poor families given a dairy cow on credit and repaid in installments after selling milk.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya says the programme that targets all households in the area will be conducted by vetting committees drawn from all wards.

Though sugarcane farming covers the largest area in Kakamega County, most small-scale farmers do not reap maximum benefits due to lack of economies of scale and challenges experienced in the sugar industry.

To help diversify income for residents, the county government has undertaken the initiative.

Oparanya says the programme that targets to reach all households will be conducted at the sub-county level by vetting committees drawn from all wards.

Oparanya also says the initiative targets to have each willing household involved in dairy farming over the next ten years.
