Naomi Osaka is the world’s number one tennis player.
Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka has had a Barbie doll modelled after her as part of the Barbie Role Model series. The series is dolls made in the likeness of extraordinary women in the world. Just hours after the Naomi Osaka doll was revealed, it sold out.
The Osaka Barbie features the four-time Grand Slam winner in her outfit from the 2020 Australian Open. It also comes with a replica of her Yonex racket retailing at $29.99 box. Naomi was the perfect choice for the Barbie series due to her exemplary athleticism and activism. Carlyle Nuera, the designer who crafted the doll, said “Obviouly, Naomi’s athletic skill is unmatched, that’s a fact. But what I personally admire the most about Nomi Osaka is how she uses her platform the spotlight on her voice, to raise awareness about social justice”.
A few months ago, Naomi withdrew from the French Open and later from the Wimbledon tournament due to mental health reasons. She recently penned an essay called “It’s O.K. Not to Be O.K.” , which addresses mental health. She has been an activist for the Black Lives Matter movement bearing the names of innocent black people who were slain at the hands of police at the 2020 U.S. open. All this she has done at only 23 years of age, so it’s a no-wonder why her Barbie dolls have flown off the shelves.
Naomi is expected to return to play at the Olympics.
