2022 Deputy Presidential debate to be held on Tuesday

The Deputy Presidential debate will be held on Tuesday next week at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Karen, Nairobi.

In a statement Wednesday, the Presidential Debates Secretariat said the debate will proceed in two tiers with the first featuring Deputy Presidential candidates whose popularity ratings, based on three recent opinion polls, stand below 5pc, while the second tier will involve candidates who have polled above 5pc in the same opinion surveys.

The first debate will run from 6:00 pm and end at 7:30 pm while the second debate will go on air from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

KBC’s Jacob Kioria and Linda Alela of TV47 will moderate the first tier while Sophia Wanuna of KTN and James Smart of NTV will moderate the second tier.

Panel discussions for both debates will be moderated by Trevor Ombija of Citizen TV.

“The moderators have been selected based on rigorous criteria that, among other things, endear the principles of impartiality, fairness and objectivity, as strong understanding of the Kenyan political landscape and the major issues of this election. Under the presidential debates rules, the moderators will select the questions to be asked, and shall not share the same with the candidates. They will NOT meet with any of the campaign teams or the candidates,” read part of the statement.

“Once again, We wish to reiterate our commitment to delivering a debate founded on the principles of fairness, integrity, independence and accountability as enshrined in the Presidential Debates Guidelines,” they added.

The Presidential Debates Secretariat is a joint organ of the Media Owners Association (MoA), the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) and the Kenya Editor’s Guild (KEG).

The candidates will include Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate Martha Karua, Deputy President William Ruto (UDA) running mate Rigathi Gachagua, Justina Wamae who is Prof George Wajackoyah ‘s Roots Party running mate and Agano Party Presidential candidate David Mwaure Waihiga running mate Ruth Mutua.
