3.4 million Kenyans face starvation

More than 3.4 million Kenyans are facing starvation. Consequently, the Kenya Red Cross Society has launched one billion shillings appeal to help drought-stricken areas.

Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet has said the money will be spent in nine most affected counties.

The counties are Mandera, Garissa, Marsabit, Kitui, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Wajir, Kilifi and Kajiado counties.

He added that the money will help until the next harvest expected in July 2018.

12 million shillings is expected to go into health and nutrition, 112 million to water, sanitation and hygiene while cash transfers will take up 355 million.

The livestock off-take programme will require 60 million shillings, food distribution 44 million shillings and early recovery 420 million shillings.

Dr. Gullet said KRCS has increased the number of targeted population, to enable the organization support more families facing drought crisis which has adversely affected communities in the arid and semi-arid areas.

He appealed to both local and international partners to support the humanitarian organization in its mitigation effort, noting the last appeal it made in 2017 to raise Sh 2.5 billion for the same course only managed to get 76 per cent.

“We are looking forward to reach our target in this new appeal. We urge all well-wishers to contribute generously towards the kitty,” he added.

The Secretary General also said KRCS has partnered with the Meru County government to provide drought resistant seeds to farmers, especially in the dry areas of the County.

Kenya Red Cross Society launched its first emergency appeal in November 2016, with a target of 140,000 people in five counties, last year in January it revised the appeal targeting a population of 340,786 in 13 counties and in February, the same year, it also sought assistance to help one million people in 13 counties.
