Fifty Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in Samburu County have been upgraded to new primary schools to accommodate an increasing population of pupils.
Samburu County Director of Education, Zacherry Mutwiri said that upgrading of ECD centers to primary schools will reduce distance from one school to another, a move he said would encourage many children to enroll in schools next year.
Mutwiri said the county has witnessed enrollment in primary schools improve by 20.4 per cent within a period of one year.
However, Speaking at AIC Moi girls secondary school grounds in Maralal town on Thursday, Mutuiri noted that there was a huge shortage of teachers in the county.
Further, he urged the leaders, parents and residents to consider employing BOM teachers as the government embarks on employing more teachers.
Elsewhere, area DC Charles Igiha appealed to parents to send all children to school saying that most well performing children are left to look after livestock leaving the poor performing ones to go to school thus poor performance in samburu county
