Over 5,000 senior citizens to benefit from social protection programme

Over 5, 000 elderly persons will benefit from the government’s social protection programme this year in Siaya County, area Social Development Officer Maxwel Anyona has said.

Anyona said 5,182 people aged over 80 years will benefit from the programme that will see them earn sh2,000 monthly from the state coffers.

He said that apart from the programme that targets those aged 80 years and above, another programme that benefits selected old persons aged 70 years and above will also see another 20,558 senior citizens benefit from cash transfer.

Presenting the department’s progress report during the county service delivery and coordination committee meeting, Anyona said the first tranche of the payments were expected in March this year.

The meeting was chaired by Siaya county commissioner, Josephine Onunga and was held at the Probation Girls Hostel hall in Siaya town.

Of the total beneficiaries, said Anyona, 1,224 are from Bondo, 689 from Ugenya, 670 from Alego/Usonga and 666 from Gem sub-county.

Ugunja sub-county will have 619 beneficiaries while Rarieda will have 611 senior citizens benefitting from the cash transfer programme, said the officer.

Anyona called on those benefitting from the government grants to put them to good use.
