Agnes Kavindu headed for landslide victory in Machakos by-election

Agnes Kavindu Muthama is poised to become the next Machakos Senator, reaffirming Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyokas grip on Ukambani politics.

Kavindu, the estranged wife of Kalonzo’s political nemesis Johnstone Muthama is leading by a massive margin in the eight constituencies.

Most of the sub counties have reported results with final tallying ongoing at the County tallying centre at Machakos academy.

Going by the results from the constituencies Kavindu has garnered 104,080 votes against UDAs Urbanus Ngengele 19,735 votes.

The final result will be announced by IEBC returning officer Joyce Wamalwa once tallying is complete.

Provisional results from Yatta, Matungulu, Kangundo, Kathiani, Machakos town, Masinga, Mwala and Mavoko constituencies give Kavindu a landslide victory.

Tallying of constituency results still underway

The withdrawal of Maendeleo Chap Chap candidate Mutua Katuku reduced the Machakos race to a political duel between Kalonzo and Muthama.

Kavindus win will cement Kalonzo’s leadership popularity in the region and raise his stakes for his 2022 presidential bid.

Muthama attempts to dislodge Kalonzo have been dealt a major blow not withstanding a win by his ex- wife.

Muthama fellout with Kalonzo last year and joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp and he is now the chairman of UDA, a political outfit believed will be DP’s vehicle to run for President in 2022.

The poll was marred by a low voter turnout of less than 30pc.

The number of registered voters is 622,965.
