Al-Shabab attacks African Union base in Somalia

By Collins Anampiu

Fighters from the Somali militant group Al Shabaab rammed a suicide car bomb into the gates of an African Union base in Somalia early Friday morning and fought their way inside.

The attack was aimed at the base with Kenyan soldiers serving as part of an African Union force battling the Islamist group in Somalia.

According to KDF spokesperson colonel Obonyo the battle to drive the militants away from the camp is ongoing, adding that they are yet to establish any reports on the number of casualties from the attack in Ceel Cado, west of Mogadishu, near the Kenyan border.

Al Shabaab has in the past year staged multiple attacks on African Union bases in Somalia, part of a guerrilla-warfare strategy to drive out foreign troops and impose its harsh version of Islamic law across the Horn of Africa nation.
