Athletics: AK to select one team for both World Championships and  Commonwealth Games

 

The national trials to select the athletics team that will represent Kenya at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championship will be held on Friday and Saturday.

A total of 45 athletes will be picked for the games across 13 categories.

Athletics Kenya is expected to pick one team for the two championships with athletes expected to double with the exception of the marathoners.

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation,KBC Channel 1  will broadcast the two-day trials live.KBC TV will also air the Commonwealth Games and World Championship due next month.

According to AK the athletes who will participate in the world championship have been solely invited and have already attained qualifying times and will only be selected at the trials while the Commonwealth games participants will battle out for slots during the championship at Kasarani. The athletes were picked  Lieutenant General (Rtd.) Jackson Tuwei said, after satisfying both the technical and anti-doping rules.

The first two athletes across the 13 events will be picked for the games with the third athlete and wildcards decided by a panel of selectors…

Wild cards are expected to be given to 2019 World Athletics championship winners as well as 2021 Diamond league winners…..

Field events are however Conspicuously missing from the order of events with AK revealing that former world javelin champion Julius Yego has already attained qualification for the commonwealth games hence there will be no need for competition.

Meanwhile, ABSA Bank and Lotto Foundation boosted the preparations for the trials by donating Ksh.12 Million and Ksh.3 Million respectively.

“Team Kenya is expected to perform even better during the upcoming championships given our strong showing in the recent Continental Tour and the All-Africa Games. These top-level events provide us with an opportunity to set a foothold as a major sporting nation and extend our excellent record abroad. We shall continue to support Team Kenya as they embark on preparations for these events and compete against the best athletes from other countries,” Absa Bank Kenya Marketing and Corporate Relations Director Mr. Moses Muthui said.

The commonwealth games are scheduled for July 28th-August 8th in Birmingham, UK, while the World Athletics Championship will be held between July 15th -24th In Oregon, USA.
