Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is urging voters in Mt Kenya region to turn out in large numbers and vote for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Presidential candidate William Ruto come August 9.
Waiguru says Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition is banking on non-existence voter apathy in the region, so as to deny Ruto a first-round win.
Speaking during a campaign rally at Kiamutugu area of Gichugu constituency, the governor said the Azimio campaign team “knows very well they won’t defeat Ruto in the region” and therefore would wish to see a low voter turnout.
She said the region has not shifted its support for Ruto and asked those who think otherwise to wait for the polls.
Waiguru who held roadside campaign rallies at Githure, Kiamutugu, Mbiri and Ithare towns on Tuesday, said Ruto is assured of more than 90 percent of votes in Kirinyaga.
She said even with the naming of Azimio running mate for Raila Odinga fromMt. Kenya, the region is solidly in UDA and will vote for Ruto.
The governor dismissed recent opinion polls which showed Raila leading in popularity as fake.
Waiguru who is defending her gubernatorial seat on UDA ticket asked voters tovote in all party candidatesto ensure Ruto has enough foot soldiers.
“Am asking you to give our Presidential candidate foot soldiers, we need to give him a UDA governor, senator, Women Representative, Mps and MCAs so that we can work in harmony and deliver all development that you want,”she said.
She asked voters to give her second term in office so as to continue the transformation journey started in 2017.
“The gubernatorial race is not a beauty contest, it’s about who can work for you. My development record is out there for all of us to see. Those on the other side have been leaders but have nothing to show. That is why I am asking you to support by bid so that we can do more hospitals, markets, roads, water projects, ECDE among others,” she added.
She said her Wezesha Kirinyaga empowerment programmes were a perfect example of the bottom-up economic model that had a very big impact on lives of the people.
