Be vigilant: Disaster Management Unit to Kenyans

By A. Kaikai/ V. Muyakane

As Kenyans of all walks of life festive season , security and emergency units are on high alert to respond to  emergency situations.

However, despite their preparedness, the National Disaster Management Unit of the Kenya police and the Kenya Red cross are calling on Kenyans to be vigilant and report any emergency cases to relevant authorities for quick response.

The Unit’s deputy director Pius Mwachi said security agencies manning public places frequented by Kenyans must remain extra vigilant to avert disasters.

Among measures taken by the unit, is the sensitization of those responsible for public security at the county level.

His sentiments were echoed Michael Ayabei of the Kenya Red Cross Society who said only professionals should respond to emergency cases to avert loss of lives.

This even as Strathmore University fired its Director of Security and suspended three top officials following the shambolic evacuation drill in which one person died.

In a statement, the Strathmore University Council announced that it had terminated the services of the Security Director with immediate effect.

The drill undertaken on 30th November in the campus in Madaraka estate went awry after police officers allegedly fired gunshots in the air, sending everyone into frenzy.

One person died while three others were hospitalized after sustaining injuries. The university council also announced it is engaging the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the role played by the police.
