British High Commissioner launches PROJECT to support media freedom

The British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott has Tuesday announced the setup of a programme dubbed PROJECT to support media freedom and the media environment in Kenya.

The programme will support the sector in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa.

The PROTECT programme will also provide grants to journalists to support the production of data journalism stories.

During the Press Club meeting hosted by the Kenya Editors’ Guild, Marriott said the programme might be extended to other places in Kenya after the trial period.

The programme has been operating since January, and has run data journalism training, trained female journalists on safety and protection, both physical and digital, and a mentorship programme.

It has also published a Monitoring Report on violations and attacks against media practitioners.
