The government has approved Kshs 3.2 billion payout for women, the youth and people with disabilities after doing business with the government.
At a cabinet meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Cabinet said the funds will settle all pending payments under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) Empowerment Programme for the Financial Year 2015/2016.
Suppliers under the empowerment Programme have gone for years without payment occasioning the intervention of the President.
The decision by the Cabinet puts an end to long years of waiting and apprehension by women, the youth and people living with disability.
The Access to Government Procurement Opportunities Empowerment Programme was introduced by President Uhuru Kenyatta through a directive that 30% of all government tenders be set aside for the youth, women and people with disabilities.
The programme has however run into headwinds with continued non-payment leaving suppliers with huge losses.
On Tuesday state departments presented proposals of how they intended to honor the debts owed to suppliers but the meeting did not arrive at a decision pending today’s meeting.
The meeting also chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that all ministries start paying with effect beginning Thursday.
