Vihiga Queens began their quest for the CAF women’s Champiosn League title on a losing note after losing 0-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in their group B’ opener at June 30th Stadium,Cairo,Egypt.
Melinda Kgadiete opened the scoring in the 3rd minute after chipping over an onrushing queens goalkeeper .
The second half witnessed some critical saves by The Queens’ goalkeeper, Lilian Onyango Awuor, to deservedly win the Woman of The Match Award.
We tried to finish the match early, but they played defensively and their goalkeeper did great”.
“It’s good for us to have the three points to get the confidence the players need for future matches. We could’ve changed the result today if we’d converted our chances into goals, but this is what we’ll work on”, Agnes Nkosi Mamelodi Sundowns Coach said.
Vihiga Queens haed coach Charles Okere remarked:
“I congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on the win, and I congratulate my players on fighting till the end. We’ve trained to play defensively but we did not defend well. To be able to attack, we have to defend and prevent goals, so when we do that we can win”.
“It’s very encouraging for our goalkeeper to win Woman of The Match and will help her focus more”.
Vihiga Queens goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor was named Woman of The Match and said:
“The match was not easy. But we will learn from it and keep going in the other matches. Being Woman of The Match today motivates me to work harder on myself and help my team”.
