Ferguson Cheruiyot enhanced his chances of winning 40,000 dollar prize money and a wild Card for the IAAF World Championships by winning the 800 meters race during the eight leg of the Diamond league held on Thursday night at the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm, Sweden.
Cheruiyot who now tops the 800 metres standings on 26 points after finishing 4th in Oslo Norway last week, completed the race in a time of one minute 45.07 seconds beating France’s Pierre-Ambroise Bosse and Adam Kszczot from Poland to the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
World and Olympic champion David Rudisha completed the two lap race in the 4th position. In javelin, world champion Julius Yego finished third with a throw of 83.09 metres.
Egypt’s Ihab Abdelrahman emerged victorious with a throw of 86 metres and was followed by Germany’s Thomas Roehler.
In the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase, Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech finished 2nd behind Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet who won the race in 9 minutes 08.37 seconds.
Sofia Asefa from Ethiopia was third. World Champion Nicholas Bett was beaten to the 4th spot in the 400 metres hurdles in the race that was won by Javier Culson of Puerto Rico ahead of United States’ Kerron Clement.
The 9th round of the “Diamond League” meeting will be held in Monaco next month. Winners of each Diamond Race will get a Diamond Trophy, 40’000 dollars prize money, and a wild card for the IAAF World Championships.
