A prominent Nyeri businessman and his female employee were Thursday night shot dead by unknown assailants along the Nyeri-Kiganjo road while driving towards Nyeri town.
Peter Mwangi Commonly known by many as ‘Sung’ and his employee Jennifer Wanjiru were shot dead after the car they were travelling in was sprayed with bullets 400metres from Kiganjo Police Training College.
The two who were aboard a Suzuki Escudo were driving towards Nyeri Town from Chaka township where Peter Mwangi AKA ‘Sung’ operates a club and a butchery.
Reports indicate that when they passed the police college’s gate at around 8pm, they were accosted by armed men who sprayed their car with bullets from all directions.
After the vehicle stopped, the gang according to police followed it and again shot the two in the head.
Police termed the incident as assassination but they are yet to establish the motive.
Wanjiru, a mother of two was only a day old at her new job after being offered a waitress job by Mwangi at his club.
According to her friends, Wanjiru was heading to her home in King’ong’o and was offered a ride by her boss.
Kieni-East OCPD, Michael Mbuluku said nothing was stolen from the two.
Businesspeople who rushed to the scene following the incident demanded urgent action from the police to put to an end the rising cases of insecurity in the county which has seen a number of their colleagues either killed or maimed in the recent past.
They vowed to petition that government on the matter with a view to finding a solution to the runaway insecurity.
Last Saturday night, another businessman by the name, Alfred Ndiangui was shot in the head at his home on the outskirts of Nyeri town.
The gang armed with two Ceska pistols robbed Ndiangui of his Ceska pistol, Sh 20,000 and two cell phones and later fled using a motorbike.
He is currently admitted to hospital in critical condition.
Gangsters believed to be of the same gang are reported to have attempted to carjack a Nyeri-based politician but their plan was thwarted by the politician and his friend who drove at a high speed to the Central Police station in Nyeri Town.
The same night, a gang managed to carjack a pastor at Skuta estate and robbed him of valuables including a Toyota Corolla 110 car.
Last month, a gang comprising young men in their mid-20s snatched two AK 47 rifles from police officers before they again robbed two businessmen in Nyeri town.
The regional police commander Larry Kieng, has however assured the business community in the region of improved security and said they are following crucial leads that might lead to the arrest of the members of these gangs and their associates.
