Defending champions Manchester City, trounced Championship side Bournemouth 2 – 1 at home in a Carabao Cup match.
The home side drew first blood in the 18th minute after great link up play by the ever impressive Phil Foden and debutant Liam Delap, in which the latter neatly tucked in.
Four minutes later saw Manchester City collect the ball from the back of their own net as Dan Gosling equalized for the visitors.
City, kept on asking the questions and Riyad Mahrez had an opportunity to score but found goalkeeper Travers in fine form, as he parried it out for a corner kick.
The effects of playing too many games; in a short span with a hurried preseason, were there to see as both sides lost players in innocuous injuries before the break.
The Citizens cranked up the pressure in the second half and threatened to curve open the Bournemouth defence but for their profligacy in front of goal.
It seemed that they were to rue their chances when Sam Surridge met an inch perfect cross with his head, but misdirected it.
The industrious and indefatigable Phil Foden, who had missed several chances, scored the winner in the 75th minute as he pounced on a rebound to poke the ball in.
In the dying minutes, the poppies threw the kitchen sink but couldn’t find the much needed equalizer.
