The Director of Africa Center for Disease Control Dr. John Nkengasong says the Delta variant originally reported in India is the one causing a surge in Covid-19 infection rates in Africa.
Speaking during the weekly briefing Dr. Nkengasong said 27 countries on the continent have reported having the Delta variant.
The Director noted that Africa is facing a major challenge in accessing the vaccines, yet when the vaccines finally become available, the logistics for vaccination in some countries are limited adding that this is being compounded by vaccine hesitancy in some member states.
The Africa CDC Director, said that by this week Africa has reported over 5.7 million COVID-19 cases accounting for 3.1% of total cases reported globally, with over 5 million people having recovered, which is 87% of the total cases reported on the continent.
