Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa wants county governments to establish disaster management teams and policies to save lives and property in the event of a disaster.
Wamalwa has also called on the county assemblies to enact legislation that would guide the establishment of the disaster response and management teams.
Disasters such as the Solai Dam tragedy that killed 47 people , floods that devastated counties such a Tana River and Kilifi two months as well as fires in Nairobi county have put to test the disaster preparedness of the country and more so the county governments.
Wamalwa says that the establishment of a disaster response and management team in each county is long overdue.
The CS who was touring the Kamukunji market in Kitale razed down recently where traders lost property valued at millions of shillings, called on the 47 county Governors and the respective county assemblies to initiate proper Disaster Risk Management policy and the requisite legal frame work that will ease management of Disasters.
Wamalwa also wants the county governments to equip the existing disaster management teams.
The CS donated 2000 Iron sheets to the affected traders to assist them rebuild their stalls while calling on the market management to make sure that genuine victims are supported.
