EACC detectives arrest KEBS MD Bernard Njiraini amid graft probe

Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Bernard Njiraini was arrested Thursday morning for frustrating graft investigations at the parastatal.

Njiraini was arrested for refusing to give EACC detectives original documents related to multimillion-shilling tenders the commission is investigating.

EACC arrested Njiraini as a penal consequence of failing to comply with a notice issued to him pursuant to Section 27 and Section 66 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act No. 3 of 2003.

EACC has been investigating allegations of procurement irregularities and payment of bribes in respect of awards for tenders for provision pre-export conformity of goods, used motor vehicles, mobile equipment and spare parts by KEBS.

The Commission has on numerous occasions requested for original documents from the KEBS Managing who has failed and/or refused to comply thereby continuously frustrating the timely conclusion of investigations.

On June 18,  EACC had asked Njiraini to supply them with 15 sets of documents it needed to conduct investigations.

EACC boss Twalib Mbarak was seeking to have tender advertising notices, bank tender documents, all bids submitted by the bidders, tender opening minutes, list of bidders and individual tender evaluation score sheets.
