Echesa in court for assaulting IEBC official

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa will be detained at Gigiri police station for one more day.

His fate will be determined tomorrow (Tuesday) when the Kiambu Court rule on whether he will be remanded in custody for seven more days as requested by the prosecution in order to complete their investigations in the case where Echesa is facing charges of assaulting an official of the IEBC last Thursday during the Matungu Consistency by-election.

He was arrested by police in Kakamega last Friday for questioning over the election violence.

Echesa had claimed that a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) agent had been ejected from the polling station under unclear circumstances under the instruction of a presiding officer.

The lawyers further asked for his release on bail saying the former Cabinet Secretary will not interfere with the case nor abscond. Ombeta opposed the application by the prosecution to keep the suspect in custody for seven more days it seeks to introduce additional charges. The defence accused the government of framing charges against him.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has also presented himself at Kakamega police station where he has recorded a statement amid plans to arraign him in a court outside Kakamega county.

Malala presented himself to Kakamega Police station following a directive by the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
