COVID-19: 25 more succumb, another 1,470 infected

25 more covid-19 patients have succumbed to the disease, raising the number of fatalities from the novel coronavirus in the country to 1,228. The worrying death toll was confirmed at a time an additional 1,470 people tested positive for the virus.

The total number of confirmed cases in Kenya now stands at 68,193 from a cumulative test of 774,982 people.

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 1,364 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities while another 5,726 are on home-based isolation and care.

In a statement, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe painted an extremely worrying situation in the country given the number of people requiring medical support due to infection from covid-19.

“54 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 16 of whom are on a ventilatory support, and 32 on supplemental oxygen.” Kagwe disclosed

The minister further said another 93 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 73 are in general wards and 20 are in High Dependency Unit (HDU).

And as has been the trend over the last couple of months, out of the 1,470 new cases, Nairobi, Mombasa and Kilifi still lead with 649, 183 and 142 cases respectively.

On a positive note, 791 patients have recovered from the disease. 695 of them have been on home-based care while 96 were discharged from hospital. Total recoveries have now risen to 44,872.
