Kenya’s Eric Kiptanui Sunday emerged victorious in the 2019 edition of the Barcelona Half marathon in Spain after clocking 01 hour 1 minute and 04 seconds.
Ethiopia’s Abebe Degefa and Betesfa Getahun took the second and third positions respectively.
Sweden’s debutant Napoleon Solomon, took charge of the race in the opening stages, accompanied by the Kenyan trio of Kiptanui, Jonathan Korir and Meshack Koech, the Ethiopian pair of Abebe Degefa and Betesfa Getahun and Ugandan Moses Kurong.
The latter dropped back from the main group shortly afterwards, eliminating his chance of reaching the podium again after finishing third last year.
The remaining sextet went through 15 kilometres in 43 minutes and 52 seconds with Solomon doing most of pacing. From then on they increased their speed but Kiptanui remained on their shoulders.
The 28-year-old Kenyan overtook the Ethiopians in the closing metres to romp home in 1 hour 01 minutes and 44 seconds.
Kenya’s Sally Chepyegon finished third in the women’s race behind Ethiopians, Roza Dereje and Dibaba Kuma who finished first and second respectively.
