Ex-MP Mathew Lempurkel charged afresh with hate speech

Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel tribulations are far from over.

Lempurkel who has been out on bail for assaulting the current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, on November 21, 2016 at Harambee House in Nairobi has been charged afresh with hate speech.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji amended the charges against him introducing an additional count of hate speech.

Lempurkel is accused of making remarks bordering on incitement against two communities living in the volatile Laikipia County last year.

According to the new charge, the former MP uttered abusive and threatening words towards the members of the White community while on a local television show.

He also faces another charge of uttering abusive and threatening remarks against another community on the same date.

Lempurkel was freed after the court retained the cash bail terms he was granted on September 9, 2021.

The case will be mentioned on February 16. His assault case is pending at the appellate court.

With the heightened political activity ahead of the August 9 polls, the government has intensified a crackdown on hate mongers.

Three legislators have been implicated namely Meru Senator Mithika Linturi who has been freed after arraignment in court, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and MPs Richard Onyonka.
