Khat farmers in Kirinyaga and Embu Counties are up in arms over the proposal by some MCAs and a lobby group to outlaw the stimulant in parts of coast region.
The farmers who grow Muguka said such a ban would deal a heavy blow in their regions where the crop is the main economic driver.
The farmers who congregated at Piai market on the border of the two counties linked the proposed ban to trade wars, arguing that it was not backed by any scientific research that established negative effects on the people.
Embu Muguka Sacco chairman Laban Njiru said they sell Miraa worth at least 10 million shillings daily to Mombasa County alone, money that has changed the economic fortunes of Mbeere and Murinduko farmers who previously wallowed in poverty before they took to its farming.
Embu Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Muriithi Kiura said the government has recognized Muguka as a cash crop, hence no regional assembly should attempt to ban it.
