FIFA 2018 World Cup tops June searches on Google

The 2018 FIFA World Cup was the most searched topic on Google in June this year.

This is according to the latest search results released by Google which indicates that out of the top ten searched topics on the search engine, eight of them were about the World Cup.

The newly appointed State House Deputy Spokesperson Kanze Dena was also among the top ten.

We’re back to the emotive four-year ritual, the World Cup and evidently, Kenyans’ fingers can hardly avoid keying questions about FIFA World Cup 2018 on their browsers.

According to the latest Google search trends, World Cup Fixtures topped the list of most searched topics.

Kenyans went online to look up groups and results of completed matches at the preliminary group stages. 436 million results in 1.11 seconds. A whooping 1.97 billion results in 0.97 seconds.

Kenyans also went online to keep track of teams such as Brazil, a World Cup favorite.

Conversations centered on forward Neymar da Silva Junior and expectations placed on him for Brazil’s advancement at the competition. The mounting pressure was apparent following the close of the second and third games where Neymar wept despite Brazil edging Costa Rica 2-0.

The newly appointed State House Deputy Spokesperson Kanze Dena was also among the top ten.

Kanze was newly appointed State House Deputy Spokesperson in an overhaul of the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit.

In the same month, Kanze gave her first official State House briefing and Kenyans online chewed over her performance, and a search on the former Swahili anchor generates 302,000 results in only 0.32 seconds.

It would take a little under 1 second to generate 331 million results for the Portugal versus Spain match which was the sixth most searched, a game where Cristiano Ronaldo’s first World Cup hat trick helped Portugal to a 3-3 draw with the Spaniards.

Kenyans also searched for news of the death of Tanzanian Bongo artist Sam wa Ukweli who fell sick while recording music at the studio and was pronounced dead on arrival at Dar es Salaam hospital.

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup coming to a close mid this month, the soccer tournament is likely to maintain its command of most popular searches this month.
