Five dead, five seriously injured in road accident in Kakamega

Five people have perished and five others were seriously injured following a road accident at River Liwondwe Bridge, on the Ekero- Buyangu highway in Kakamega County.

The ten who included young children had boarded a personal car from Nairobi and were headed to Busia for the Christmas festivities. Allan Aoko reports.

Mumias OCPD Peter Kattam said a man his wife and children are among five people who perished in the dawn accident at River Liwondwe bridge. He cautioned motorists to obey traffic, especially during the festive season.

The bodies of the deceased are lying at St Mary’s Mumias mortuary while the injured are being treated at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority has suggested alternative routes for motorists using the Nairobi -Nakuru highway following heavy prolonged traffic jams experienced by travellers using the road.

In a statement, the authority has recommended the Southern Bypass through to Gikambura, Gigiri or Mutarakwa, Ndenderu then Kamandura in order to bypass James Gichuru to Rironi (A3) road.

The other alternative recommended in order to avoid the GilGil weighbridge is the Flyover to Njambini, Engineer, Olkalau, Lanet or Naivasha, Engineer, Olkalau then Lanet.
