Four officers caught brutalizing JKUAT student identified

Four of the officers caught on camera brutally assaulting a student from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have been identified.

“The national police service wishes to inform the public that the four officers who were caught on camera using excessive force on a JKUAT student have been identified and consequently interdicted from services as per police procedures,” said IG Mutyambai.

“Further action and other internal disciplinary processes will follow the recommendation of the Internal Affairs Unit investigation,” read part of the statement.

Monday night a viral video of police officers brutalizing a student from JKUAT surfaced after police were called in to quell the chaos.

Following Monday’s incident, the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai directed the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate its officer’s filmed using excessive force and make recommendations within 24 hours.

“Our attention has been drawn to a video clip circulating on social media of officers applying what appears to be excessive force on a JKUAT student,” he said.

Mutyambai said that police action should never be punitive and should instead focus on maintenance of law and order and processing offenders to court.
