Air transport to Garissa County has been enhanced following the introduction of daily flights by a local airline.
Freedom Airlines which operates from Wilson airport will now be flying to Garissa six times a week up from two weekly flights.
The airlines Manager Shallow Abukar said the company which operates a 50 seater plane decided to increase the frequency of the flights following the growing demand for air travel.
Garissa County government has lauded the move saying the initiative will attract more local and foreign investors to the region.
The flights are also expected to benefit patients who require emergency and specialized treatment in Nairobi and abroad.
The company also operates similar flights to and from Wajir, Mandera, Eldoret, Mombasa, Moyale, Takaba, Elwak and major towns in neighboring Somalia.
Representatives from Garissa County government led by several county Executive Committee members urged other travel agencies to undertaking such business including to sub-counties.
County Executive Committee (CEC) in charge of roads Abdi Omar said the county welcomes all investors and request quality services for the residents saying there is still more to explore.
“Traveling by air to Nairobi takes less than one hour while by road is more than 6 hours. For me I have to hire and pay for a drive because of my condition. We are very happy,” an elated client said.
The flight costs shs 5,000 one way takes less than 1 hour to and from Nairobi.
