Government rolls out programme to collect data on skills

Unemployment levels in Kiambu County are set to decrease thanks to a planned initiative to be rolled out by Government in a project known as the Kenya Labour Management Information Systems (LMIS).

At the click of a button job seekers will know the available skills in all regions so that those completing school or are in the informal sector can make wise decisions while entering the labour market.

Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, State Department of Labour Ms. Joyce Mwale said when she called on the Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga that the programme will address the mismatch that has existed in the labour market.

Wanyanga said it is prudent that the team works with the national administration for the success of the programme in the region.

The LMIS Component 3 is envisaged to provide awareness in identification of LMIS users and needs specifications along production of LMIS content, awareness creation and dissemination of content at a cost of Sh1.35 billion.

The programme will be rolled out by Ministry of East Africa, Children, Labour and Social Protection (MEACLSP) to respond to the problem of obtaining timely information about labour demand and supply as well as career prospects in Kenya.

Other components to be addressed are improving youth employability, targeting 70,000 youth, with up to 1,000 Master Craftsmen at a cost of Sh5.8 billion to be carried out by National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) between 2016 and 2021.

“The LMIS helps private and public actors in the labour market to make decisions and formulate policies but the LMI currently available is often scattered over different locations and is hard to find.” Mwale explained.

Mwale said it was infrequently interpreted and analyzed for decision making and policy formulation.

The lack of easily available information about the employment outlook, job profiles, and career prospects makes it difficult for job seekers to plan their careers, she added.
