Government to spend Ksh30bn to construct dams

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has urged governors to set aside of land for construction of mega dams in their respective counties.

Wamalwa said that food sufficiency is part of the government big four agenda and it involves construction of one mega dam in all the 47 counties.

Speaking in Arsin village in Samburu North Sub County, the CS said that construction of these dams will cost the government over Sh 30 billion and will help in the collection of rain water for domestic and livestock use.

He noted that construction has already begun in some counties and urged governors to prioritize the setting aside of land for the project which is a drought mitigation measure and also ensure food security in the country.

“The government has started construction in some counties such as Sio Murun dam in Pokot which will cost Sh 9 billion, Badasa dam in Marsabit County as well as the Isiolo dam to help in the collection of excess rain water.” He said.

While issuing relief food to 15 families whose houses were swept away by floods on Tuesday night and lead to the death of two women and one child, Wamalwa urged people to move to higher ground during the ongoing rainy season to avoid loss of life and destruction of property.

He mentioned that the government will set aside more relief food to be disbursed in arid and semi-arid counties.
