Government to upgrade Isiolo International Airport

The government plans to upgrade Isiolo International Airport by among others expanding and extending its run way in a bid to attract major airlines and meet international standards.

LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority Chairman Ambassador Francis Muthaura says the authority prioritize the airport’s upgrading so that it is done within a reasonable time frame to enable business to thrive and open up the region for more development.

Currently, one passenger airline operates at the airport due to a short run way and lack of cargo storage facilities.

Mid last year the 2.5 billion shillings Isiolo International Airport was officially launched and was expected to open up the northern Kenya tourism circuit and boost the region’s economy.

However, only one passenger airline has been operating at the airport due to its short run way. Area leaders now want the run way extended from the current 1.4 kilometers to at least 3 kilometers and also improvements on the airport’s lighting.

Miraa and flower farmers are said to prefer to use Wilson Airport to transport their produce due to lack of proper cargo storage facilities at the Isiolo International Airport.

LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority Chairman Ambassador Francis Muthaura says the government will prioritize upgrading of the airport to international standards.

Isiolo International Airport  is one of the LAPPSET flagship projects.
