Gov´t to establish 47 new legal metrology laboratories countrywide

The ministry of industrialization says it is working on establishing 47 new legal metrology laboratories in the country.

Legal metrology is the application of legal requirements to measurements and measuring instruments for the protection of consumers and fair trade.

The ministry further says it was also liaising with the Cabinet and Parliament on enacting two revised bills, the Legal Metrology Bill and Trade Description Bill which it says underpins the work of metrology in the country.

In a statement, the ministry also says it is in consultation with the national treasury to secure funding for the modernization of the metrology laboratory project.

The modernization according to the ministry is to enable it to add electricity and water meters to the regime of mandatory verifiable measuring instruments in the country.

Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Betty Maina also says her ministry will continue collaborating with other institutions to shore up the local capability to produce Personal Protective Gears as the country fights further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CS commended KEBS, Numerical Machine Complex, Kenya Institute of Research and Development and the Kenya Intellectual Property Institute for facilitating the production of PPE’s.
