Govt issues milk coolers to dairy farmers in Laikipia

The national government has issued milk coolers, motorbikes and milk cans to farmers at Ngenia Muungano Dairy farmers Coop Society worth 8 million shillings.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri says the move will help boost milk production in the area by offering storage and transport on motorbikes to help eradicate poverty.

The Ministry of Agriculture is taking the initiative to ensure farmers at the grassroots level are empowered and ensure that dairy products are of high quality before reaching the market.

CS Kiunjuri was at Ngenia Muungano Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society in Laikipia North where he officially handed over milk coolers, motorbikes and milk cans to farmers.

The milk coolers have a capacity to hold 3,000 litres of milk before it is collected by buyers.

During the handover ceremony, Kiunjuri said he was concerned about the poor milk prices and encouraged farmers to join cooperative societies to pool their produce and negotiate for better prices.

He noted that the motorcycles will create employment for the youth who will be collecting the produce from those who cannot make it to the collection centres especially the elderly.
