Govt to revive stalled Voi housing project

Plans are underway to revive construction of the stalled multi-million shillings housing project in Voi, Taita Taveta County.

The affordable housing project stalled six years ago on account of inadequate funds which will be now availed under the National Housing Development Fund according to Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga.

Voi has in the recent years seen an increase in population partially attributed to the operationalization of the standard gauge railway with the county to county Makadara Express train making a stop in the town.

This has opened up the region to more investment, trade and tourism activities.

However, the increase in population is threatening growth of the town with a scarcity of affordable and quality housing.

As such the government plans to revive construction of the multi-million shillings Voi Housing Project that stalled in 2012.The project is aimed at bridging the housing deficit in the area targeting at least 100 households.

The project that was to be completed in 2014, stalled after the contractors downed their tools over what they termed as lack of funding.

Going forward, the project will be funded through the National Housing Development fund.

According to Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, the move will ensure construction works remain on course with completion due in 6 months.
