Grief has engulfed Kisiriri Village in Narok North Sub County after three children drowned in River Siyiapei on Tuesday evening.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, the area Sub County Police Commander Frederick Siundu said the deceased include two girls aged 15 and 12 years old who had gone to the river to swim.

A young boy who watched them as they entered the water quickly jumped into the water to try to save the two but unfortunately, he too was overwhelmed by the water and drowned.

When police were informed of the incident, he said, they immediately looked for a diver who recovered two bodies of the girls who are said to come from the same extended family.

“The girl’s uncle called my office informing us of the incident and we acted immediately. I convey my condolences to the families that have lost their dear ones,” he said.

However, he said, the body of the boy has not yet been recovered but police are still in the area trying to retrieve the body.

“The two bodies were recovered at around 5.30 pm. When darkness fell, it was difficult to look for the other body. However, we will not leave the area until the body is recovered,” he said.

The Sub County Police Commander lamented that the incident comes only two days after another adult man drowned in River Ewaso Ng’iro.

He confirmed that the man was trying to cross the flooded river when he, unfortunately, slipped into the water and was swept away.

“We all know that we are in the season of heavy rains and most rivers including the seasonal rivers are flooded. That is why everyone should be vigilant when crossing or bathing in rivers,” said Siundu.

He said the two bodies were taken to Narok County Referral Mortuary Hospital for preservation awaiting postmortem.

In the year 2018, 17 persons died on the spot after the bus they were travelling in plunged into River Siyiapei.
