A 38-year-old man is nursing serious wounds at the Nyahururu county referral hospital after he was attacked by a hippopotamus.
Mathew Kipkurui who was on his way to work on Monday morning was attacked by the hippo at Manguo area in the outskirts of Nyahururu town.
According to the father of two, the animal sprung from a nearby bush before launching the brutal attack as he was walking along the shores of River Ewaso Nyiro before jumping back into the river.
“I had tried to run for my dear life but the animal caught up with me. It broke my two legs and also bit my ribs leaving me for the dead,” He says.
Nyahururu county referral hospital chief nursing officer Mary Njoroge says the patient who was admitted at the hospital with broken ribs and legs has now stabilized.
“We immediately took him to the theater where he was operated on. He is in a stable condition but still needs specialized treatment,” She said.
The latest incident coming amid growing outcry from area residents in the wake of incessant attacks by wild animals. Barely two weeks ago, a middle-aged man and a 70-year-old man were killed by a hippo in the same area.
